The freshness of these subversions reveal spaces you didn't know were there, and achieve a rare expansion of the vocabulary of music.

Heavy on atmosphere and hooks alike, Pleasure comes one bounding step closer in the eternal quest to marry refined song craft and ungovernable noise.

It's one of the finer conversions of 2011, managing the delicate task of crafting a record that sounds both incomprehensibly universal, deeply personal, and, yes, endlessly listenable.
  4. Pure X have crafted a dream-like (think more Galaxie 500 and less Beach House) tapestry that is as difficult to derail as a freight train once it builds up relative speed.

Pleasure's ten tracks of gorgeously distorted, lo-fi pop glides languidly enough for '90s slowcore, but with woozy rhythms, lovelorn lyrics, and reverb-saturated textures that feel timeless.

Pure X may not be breaking new ground, but as far as deadbeat summer vibes done right go, Pleasure is one killer drag.

Pleasure essentially satisfies, even if I have to admit that it's hard not to feel absolutely, completely, and totally lied to by virtually everything about Pure X that isn't their music.

The lift isn't too high, but the album isn't meant to be a mood elevator. Instead, Pleasure gives you the smoke and confusion that is left when all extrinsic distractions are removed.

The cinder and smoke (and mirrors) that coats the rest makes Pleasure seem twice removed, but it's an insular listen, well-suited for personal reverie or a peyote trip at Devil's Waterhole in Inks Lake.
