Rather than slicing the Fleet Foxes cucumber too thin, Poor Man adds a whole new flavour. [Sep 2012, p.86

The result is an album not only more interesting, but far more enjoyable.

The result is a record that's primarily dedicated to beauty but with an engagingly playful spirit. [Sep 2012, p.83]

They manage to satisfy the listening needs of die-hard Fleet Foxes fans, but fail to truly carve out their own unique musical identity. This isn't to say Poor Moon doesn't offer up some great moments-they really do-just not ones that stick with you long after the record is over.

Few records in recent years have sounded this much like a toss-away popsike record from the mid-'60s. [Aug/Sep 2012, p.113]

It consistently fails to match their parent group's most sublime moments. [Sep 2012, p.110]

A pleasant and inoffensive endeavor, it'll do well to keep any Foxes fan satisfied for the remainder of the season. But don't be surprised if boredom sets in by fall.

Poor Moon turns out to be a wisp of a record, intentionally light and certainly promising but also oddly--and perhaps ironically--weightless.

Woodland tunes are not rare and only a few tracks here get the heart racing and stave off a bad case of bradycardia.

Poor Moon still feels like its developing, like it's unsure of what it will be yet. This makes their first full-length an uneven, sometimes frustratingly safe record, but it also makes it an album of some promise.
  11. 50
It's easy and buoyant, but not sound enough to stay afloat for much longer after the record ends.
  12. 40
The result is a sort of mannered, formalist rusticity that only occasionally develops a convincing momentum.

This record was supposed to be a side project to Fleet Foxes main work for Chris and Casey, and it never raises any higher than that, a side project. It’s not awful to listen too, but not likely be heard more than once. Full Review »
