POP ETC's vie for commercial radio appeal ends up feeling like watching your little brother come home from his first year of college trying on an overexcited new style, complete with awkward slang and ill-fitting fashions.

Is the band's self-titled album under the new moniker a brave change-up? Sure. Is it any good? Not even a little.

This album marks a transition rather than an arrival.

Pop Etc manage a couple of well-aimed arrows towards the heart. [Aug 2012, p.108]

Overall it just about balances out.

It's unclear whether Pop Etc have branded themselves as an out and out dance pop band, or if they remain an alternative, slightly niche group, masquerading as a clichéd pop group.

Overall, the experiments on POP ETC fall flat.

The album's a bold move for a band that had just gotten the ball rolling, and it should only boost its momentum.

Rather than bursting forth with something new and unique, they wind up rehashing stale sounds and leaving the listener with an entirely unmemorable experience.

The only problem is that many of those stylings have already been put to death, so hearing them again can be a little annoying.

[The songs'] punchiness and repetitiveness can quickly get on one's nerves, depending on your disposition.

This synth pop rhythm and blues album is nothing out of the ordinary. I do believe, however, that there are some clever twists throughout the album but unfortunately it all becomes a bit repetitive both musically and lyrically.

The Morning Benders were fantastic. Big Echo was one of my favorite albums of 2010 with an incredibly smooth and coherent sound. Each trackThe Morning Benders were fantastic. Big Echo was one of my favorite albums of 2010 with an incredibly smooth and coherent sound. Each track was pop gold. When they covered "Last Nite" on Stereogum's 2011 "Stroked: A Tribute to Is This It," I was extremely excited at the new - heavier electronic - direction in which The Morning Benders were moving. They were at a crossroad with tons of opportunity in front of them. Unfortunately, with their change in name the band seems to have decided to abandon all their history and start from scratch. In my opinion, this was a horrible mistake as POP ETC falls short of The Morning Bends in every way. Full Review »
