She sounds like a woman, and an artist, who’s finally found herself.

Katy Perry aims to please. But now she grasps that she's making the mainstream, not just swimming in it.

It doesn’t require the patience or emotional/intellectual involvement that albums I typically listen to require. The cool thing, though, is that it does have quite a bit of redeeming value.

She largely sticks to her tried-and-true pop template, each song tailor-made for mass consumption with mixed results.

As a whole, Prism is forgettable. It’s neither good nor bad, and it’s not inspirational enough to set anyone on fire who’s not already an 11-year-old girl, closeted teen boy, or existing Perry fanatic.
  6. An album with too many cooks in the kitchen and not enough good songs to recommend.
  7. Self-help and sauce remain the remit, which might have been less tiring if “Roar”, “Walking on Air” and “This Moment” offered forms fresher than, respectively, the robo-stutter of Rihanna’s “Umbrella”, weary Italo-house pianos and strenuous stadium bluster to enliven their empowerment-speak.

There's a lot to say about Katy's ability to write a catchy hook, but when it comes to diversity 'Prism' is severely lacking. Gone are the days when the instrumentation was sometimes synthetic, sometimes organic. There's one, maybe a couple songs with guitar and a couple with piano. The rest are techno-pop numbers with repetitive chord slamming and a four-on-the-floor beat. Just wish there was more there to differentiate one song from the next. Expand

I must admit I'm absolutely disappointed with this album.
It's Teenage Dream all over again. The music is more serious? Seriously, is it?
    Do
Birthday, This Is How We Do, Walking on Air, International Smile and Dark Horse seem like serious songs to you? Sure, the album has a few serious tracks, but that's what everyone expects from an album that was promised to be dark. And, it is the opposite of dark.

Katy played it safe again. All the tracks are catchy and they could do well on charts, but, they're incredibly forgettable. They not only sound alike with the songs on Teenage Dream, they also sound alike between them! By the Grace of God, Unconditionally, Roar and Walking on Air are the only standout tracks.

Katy should take more risks and try new styles. Her fans will like Prism, but the general public will hardly do.

The most uninspired record I've ever heard. It sounds like it was made in 30 minutes. Everything is calculated to appeal to the younger generation, all the songs are full of clichés and aimed at sales only. Awful. Music at its worst. Expand
