Webb's knack for purging the sentimentality out of these seemingly trite topics of conversation is most commendable.

File Provider with the best of Damien Jurado and Mark Kozelek, fellow travelers in the world of darkly compelling, unassumingly poetic acoustic ballads that are quiet but never soft.

Provider, though lovely, and featuring two outstanding acoustic songs in "Asa" and "Rivers of Gold," is not nearly the radical, aesthetic departure described in some initial reviews.

Provider isn't necessarily going to settle old scores. Its a notable release, though, both as a new work by a talented singer-songwriter and as one of what one can only hope will be several satisfying postscripts in the narrative of a great band.

Provider moans with the stuff of life--fatherhood, working full-time, joy, death--and it's one of the most mesmerizing things any songwriter can lay claim to in recent memory.

It's mostly just softly plucked, atmospheric guitar and Webb's weary vocals building up songs that are achingly slow, sombre and intimate.

Provider is a stunning and revealing record full of worldly insight, and leaves you begging for more.

I miss the Cons, but he shines in a tastefully low key way on this album. At times the fact that this is a new project is audible to my ears, but I think this has legs. Hope to hear more.
