Far from being a punching bag, this album contains enough musical muscle to throw a few punches of its own.

A mixture of pleasant, melodic love songs and dour heartbreak songs, with a couple of songs about his Christian faith thrown in.

While Turner has often used his immediately distinctive voice to salvage some middling material, that isn't the case on Punching Bag.

His records over the last nine years, including the new Punching Bag, slide too easily into benign corniness.

Turner possesses some mighty charm but it's not enough to turn that one into something listenable and he stumbles into a couple other potholes here too, all created by the desire to turn him into a big cutesy teddy bear.

The fifth Josh Turner's studio album in fact is a very average - not to say boring - compilation of not outstanding by any meanings country music. Songs do not have in them this special mojo, which would make the listener stay for longer. In return, we get twelve pieces based on stereotypical notions about country music genre - just joyful playing and complete lack of meaning. The whole album is one big cliché. Expand
