Reptilians is equal parts important, fun, and urgent, and it's hard to think of a better combination of attributes for a pop record.

Starfucker definitely have a gem with Reptilians, and have managed to make a remarkable album from a genre that can become quite stagnant and derivative of itself.

Reptilians is a batch of competent dance-pop-not as groundbreaking as fans have hoped, not as obnoxious as non-fans may've assumed-overcompensating for all the patience they've tested and the goodwill they squandered on their looping baby-steps back to the Starfucker moniker.

There aren't any weak points, and it drifts along dreamily, from one understated jam to the next.

With dance-rock standouts like "Julius" and "Bury Us Alive," the Portland quartet's third album is its best yet.

A glut of midtempo dithering mostly takes up the second half, and while some of the songs situated there are decent on their own, together they congeal into an asymmetrical mess, exposing Reptilians' front-loaded wiring.

I know the band can write damn good songs and they have proven that before and prove it here, but until they address the main problems (the still heavily reverberated vocals for one) or really venture out into something different (there is life beyond pasting snippets from philosophy lectures) I think history will keep repeating itself for these guys.

This debut proves equally effervescent. [Apr 2011, p.109]

As noisy and overwrought as Reptilians is, it's also quite promising--one has to wonder what it would sound like if Starfucker performed the same operation on its own music.

The album doesn't have that 'grab-hold-and-don't-let-go' emotional pull that would elevate it beyond sounding nice into something to treasure. It's worth your listening time though, because even though it's not always consistently a great album, it's never less than an intriguing effort.

Excerpts from British philosopher Alan Watts punctuate the album, his dry declarations bringing the mood down at intervals. Still, if you want a positive outlook on death, the overall liveliness of Reptilians should help.

With no standout tracks, Reptilians just becomes 40 minutes of innocuous, digital background music that's been done before.
