While Revival isn’t the defibrillator that Eminem needed to revive his dominance, the album has enough highlights to maintain decent replay value and enough lyrical miracles to keep mindful rap from totally flat lining. His pen game hasn't lost even half of a step, and he still possesses the neurotic edge that's always made him such a driving force in hip-hop.

At least a third of the tracks are songs I could do without. The other two-thirds show that whether you love or hate the modern day Marshall Mathers, he's still as relevant as he ever was.

Overall, the album is fairly easy listening.

While the long tracklist and equally protracted verses make for an exhausting listen, there are rewards for those that endure.

Eminem has never sounded more like a man out of time. [Mar 2018, p.107]

Revival isn’t even interesting enough to warrant all of the critical beatdowns it’s taken in its short time in the world. Instead, it’s boring and predictable, which are greater threats to the Eminem legacy than anything else.

Revival is the most pleasureless record he’s ever made, so stymied by his worst tendencies that like many other inept apologies from 2017 it only points out how much further he has to go rather than how far he’s come.

Em's so good technically and lyrically that he makes extraordinary seem normal cos we have come to expect that from him on a regular basis. IfEm's so good technically and lyrically that he makes extraordinary seem normal cos we have come to expect that from him on a regular basis. If another rapper were to drop bars and rhymes half as good as those on the album, the internet will lose their $hit. The album requires multiple listens to really appreciate the work he's put in the project. And no, he's not a shadow of his former self. Maybe, you've just moved on to club, mumble, trap, crap rap. The beats are made perfectly for what he wants to express. More to the point, this album is not one of those albums that rappers are making this days...and i mean the exploit of fans by today's rappers who use easy to make beats and the same sound, vibe and lyrics with every song they do. This album is straight forward, you can understand what he feels , he is not mumbling non sense, and as usual the flawless delivering of those top lyrics. And he did a lil' bit of something for everybody on this one. That's why i recommend this album without thinking twice. Expand

Instead of the pop-infused, polished beats on "Recovery", "Revival" mostly features badly mixed rap-rock, felling like lesser versions of a few cuts from "The Eminem Show". The production ranges from acceptable to downright horrible (tracks like "Remind Me" and "Offended" come to mind). Even seasoned producers like Just Blaze ("Like Home") and DJ Khalil ("Castle") give some of their blandest beats in a while, with others like Rick Rubin and Alex da Kid being way off their game. 'Em himself doesn't help much either. While at times sounding emotional and invested in his lines, the actual lines and his flow leave a LOT to be desired ("Believe" and "Chloraseptic"). The topics he covers are the same as before too, making his performances feel tiring. The guests (mostly pop artists) often don't offer anything notable, and while some 'Em fans might enjoy this (80 minute!) project, I highly suggest skipping it.
Favorites: "Walk On Water", "Like Home", "Arose"
Least Favorites: "Believe", "Chloraseptic", "Remind Me", "Bad Husband", "Framed", "Heat", "Offended", "Need Me", "In Your Head"

Calling this an Eminem album would be an insult. As a long time fan and listener it just sounds like Marshall needs to retire.
