Hypnotic, doomy, edgy, but strangely forgettable, too. [Apr 2012, p.84]

A little more focus and coherency would've made it a great record rather than a good one, but as an intriguing curiosity it is another excellent addition to Albarn's ever-growing list of projects.

Albarn's best work has cheek, wit and a smart-alecky desire to shake things up. All this reverence doesn't really suit him.

Rocket Juice & the Moon is a sincere and charming homage to Afrobeat, one that provides a glut of alluring moments, if a shortage of truly memorable ones.

While there are moments when everything falls into place (the Erykah Badu-assisted "Hey, Shooter"; a rare Albarn vocal on "Poison"; the sense of space on "Extinguished"), too often technical proficiency trumps songwriting.

It could have been very promising if there were more intricate elements added to the sound of each song. For me, the bass line in most of the songs were very repetitive and there were way too many filler songs in between. I also thought that Damon Albarn would be singing more of the songs (instead of two!). So, overall... it's not a bad album, but it could be much better. Full Review »
