This is vintage front-porch Cale. [May 2009, p.79]
  4. The Oklahoma singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist raises eyebrows from the get-go on his 16th solo outing, dipping into jazz for the gently swinging 'Who Knew' and the self-effacing 'Former Me.'
  5. The fact that he just turned 70 is hardly an issue here; old-guy music is the only kind Cale knows how to make. Roll On is best at its loosest.
  6. Supremely chill, utterly ageless, Cale's style fits him as perfectly as it did three decades ago.

As ever, the subtlety and naturalness of his approach belies a craftman's attention to detail. [May 2009, p.110]

I am afraid I disagree. I have been listening to J.J. since I was an early teenager and think this album is the most uncreative one of his I am afraid I disagree. I have been listening to J.J. since I was an early teenager and think this album is the most uncreative one of his career, maybe along with #8. The tunes have been heard 1000s of times before, the guitar is - I hate to say it - boring and uninspired. Roll on, J.J., don't end your wonderful music career with an album like this. Expand
