The playing and recording, needless to say, are immaculate.
  2. While there's perhaps a surfeit of synth-washes, the beautiful "Winter Elegy" superbly fulfils the opening promise.

Whatever expectations a solo album by a saxophonist conjures up, Saltash Bells is likely to belie them.

It's less introspective than Surman's past solo work has sometimes been, and it's full of buoyant, engaging lyricism.
