  • Summary: Although a New York band, Scissor Sisters (as evidenced by this debut disc) are definitely not part of the typical New York scene, eschewing garage and no wave to embrace campier, glammier 70s and 80s rock and dance music sounds. Included here is the band's cover of Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb."

  1. This is a genius pop album, one on which pretty much everything fantastic happens.

    Rather spectacular. [Jul/Aug 2004, p.126]
  3. Yes, there are a lot of reasons to hate Scissor Sisters. But this brilliant debut is not one of them.
  4. What makes these multilevel pastiches more than cheeky cutups is a genuine musicality.

I love this album and don't know how people can slate it as badly as they have. I agree with the majority, and I love the way that Ana Matronic and Jake swap vocals in songs like Filthy/Gorgeous. Expand

Great CD! Not the best I've heard but it's far, far from the worst. They deserve much more success this side (North America)of the Atlantic than they're getting. It's a highly listenable CD from start to finish. With half a dozen shines of brilliance (tracks 1-4, and the last two), you can't go wrong with this purchase. Fantastic debut, I look forward to hearing more from them in the future. Expand

Good humoristic poprock. A little bit like wtaching Clockwork Orange with CGI effects and produced by Wu. Nothing is really new, but the mix of influences does appeal from the first listen. Once you settle beyond the obvious sarcasm, there is not much left. Light and fun. Are they going to last longer than ziguezigueSputnik? Expand
