Score distribution:
  1. Positive: 5 out of 8
  2. Negative: 1 out of 8
  1. For a taste of the power of positivity, look no further than Martina McBride's splendid new album, Shine.
  2. The 42-year-old Kansas native continues to mine that vein on her 10th studio album, "Shine," but although her singing is still strong, polish and predictability are its defining traits.
  3. This is a solid, consistent date all the way through that is evidence of McBride's long chart success.
  4. In relying so heavily on a phalanx of Nashville songwriting pros--these 11 songs are the product of 32 credited writers--there's a music-by-committee quality that inevitably creeps in.
  5. Uncut

The lungs are in good shape here. [Sep 2009, p.86]
  6. The restraint that she shows in both her vocal performances and her song selection are a refreshing change of pace. Unfortunately, she still lacks the instincts of some of the genre's superior interpretive singers, especially with regard to choosing quality material.
  7. The production is predictably overblown, the lone bright spot being the tender, acoustic 'I’m Trying.'
