Shulamith proves that intelligent pop music still has the ability to seduce and enthrall. [Dec 2013, p.86]

Shulamith is by all means not a bad album, providing just enough thrills and spills to warrant repeated plays. But by expanding and deepening their sound palette, Poliça lose out on some of the original charm that helped make them unique.

Shulamith, in this way, demonstrates again Poliça’s greatest strength: making music that’s both an easy and a torturous listen.

Poliça may have more to offer, especially if they can branch out from a blueprint that they rightly feel very comfortable with, but for the time being Shulasmith is a finely executed and thematically and emotionally rich record.

As Shulamith Firestone likely highlighted for Leaneagh, feminism can be vehemently expressed, but Poliça, through art and music, makes that expression charming and danceable.

They never fully submerge themselves into new territory with this album, which becomes both the band’s main strength and weakness.

Poliça flirt with greatness often enough to make Shulamith more than worth your time, but it’s not as brave as we’d like it to be.

Despite its success, Give You The Ghost only hinted at what Poliça can do. Shulamith is a wilder, looser ride, both more experimental and more fully realized.

With Shulamith, Poliça have managed to create one of the most confident and assertive albums of the year.

Overall, Shulamith is a record that takes on serious issues but always feels engagingly personal, with ideas set to the kind of alt.pop melodies you couldn’t forget even if you wanted to.

Even if Shulamith isn't as strikingly original as Give You the Ghost, the growth in its songwriting and emotional complexity suggests Poliça are in it for the long haul.

Shulamith provides exactly what you want from a second Poliça album; it’s incredibly fresh and exciting, but still a reminder of what you loved so much the first time round.

It's propulsive enough for dance floors, and dreamy enough for headphones. [25 Oct/1 Nov 2013, p.100]

There are plenty of strengths to Shulamith, not least that it chiefly shares its blueprints with its spellbinding debut. But in expanding its horizons, it dents the assured sense of identity which made Give You the Ghost so utterly enrapturing, and reverses the dichotomy of maximalist-emotion alongside minimalist-music.

Shulamith is a much more cohesive and self-assured effort [than its debut].

There are still missteps--the ungainly "Chain My Name" and "Spilling Lines"--but between these sit a brace of casually innovative slow jams. [Nov 2013, p.76]

The work is consistently compelling but dense. [Aug-Sep 2013, p.93]

It feels darker, somehow, deliciously shadowey.

NOTE: This review is for the expanded edition of "Shulamith."

I LOVE THIS BAND! Just discovered them recently. I started with their debut album "Give You The
Ghost " which is a near masterpiece and followed that with this album. It's not that "Shulamith" is in anyway flawed in comparison with its predecessor. In fact, a number of songs on "Shulamith" , in my opinion, are more emotionally affecting and memorable than the best tracks than their debut. It's just, song for song, that album gets a perfect a perfect score from me but "Shulamith" is beautiful work of art. My favorite tracks are the catchy techno-pop "Chain My Name", "Raw Exit." and "Great Regret." (the latter two which are only available on the "expanded" edition. Those who enjoy the darker side Polica (like me) will enjoy "Smug", "Warrior Lord", "Very Cruel", and "Tiff."

It's been forever since I liked a local band, but this one might squeak in at #10 in my favorites of the year. I've listened to it two timesIt's been forever since I liked a local band, but this one might squeak in at #10 in my favorites of the year. I've listened to it two times this morning. And to think I couldn't quite finishing listening to their first album. The slurred Cat Power vocals, sad and mysterious and restrained, are woven into claustrophobic little melodies. There is a delightful sameness from track to track, as if they are all telling a slightly different version of the same heartbreaking story. It's very self-assured, and the musical direction is clear. Electronica that makes you glad to be unhappy. I give it an 8 for it's confidence, it's ingrown melodies, and its dour verve. What a great mid-week surprise. Full Review »
