Silent Shout - The Knife
Silent Shout Image
  • Summary: This is the third album (and first American release) for the Swedish brother-sister electro-pop duo of Olof Dreijer and Karin Dreijer Andersson.
Score distribution:
  1. Positive: 17 out of 22
  2. Negative: 1 out of 22
  1. This is one of the most rich and accomplished albums of recent times. Essential.
  2. If you're looking to buy this record on the back of Heartbeats you may be disappointed as it bears little resemblance to the Knife's current work.
  3. A hideous mess of electro noodling and maddeningly obtuse, tuneless vocals. [May 2006, p.126]

"We Share Our Mother's Health" and "Silent Shout" alone give this a 10 in my opinion. The synth work and vocal distortions are masterful, all while Karen's voice still retains a sense of humanism, and at multiple times during the course of the CD, brilliance. It is unlike anything I've heard in electronica, nay, anywhere in a long time. I would highly recommend anyone out there to get the live DVD if available. Expand

The thrust of this album may be entirely democratic (that being the dual nature of the artists at hand) but surprisingly (or perhaps not so indeed) the results are not, in fact, if anything, they could be used as oligarchial. Take that as you will, if you need to, for in fact an album of this magnitude cannot be entirely neglected, if it can be neglected at all. It is with this in mind that we must now examine the album, not merely (although certainly this should be included wherein) as a musical object (that is, an object of beautiful sound, indeed sound art) but art as it is in and of itself, that is what is most essential although it is not of course entirely dominant. It is the history, the entirely length of all music and with that all sound and art that this album points to, if you get my drift, so we cannot be too damning in our critique, and with that, shoudl always cast a glance on the inspirations for the work, and with that lay part of the credit as well as part of the blame. Of course there is much more to be said, and much more to say, but in conclusion we must of course ad although to neglect it the realm of comercialism surely must always be at least a tainted virtue, it still, likely, is worthy of consideration if not full purchase. After the mixed bag that was "Deep Cuts" I expected The Knife might be able to make good on the promise that was "Heartbeats" and make a Goldfrapp style synth pop masterpiece. Obviously, they had something else in mind. I gave this album three listens and just found it awful and dissapointing. I am a little surprised by the positive response both critically and from readers of this site. Makes me almost want to go back and take that fourth listen... if I only didn't suspect I would dislike it the same. Very dissapointing. Expand
