    awesome album! it's like the 2007 soundtrack for "logan's run" like imogen heap or bjork, karin has one of those original voices. this is the perfect album to sit in a dark room with and play it on surround.

    if you have friends who doubt the depth of techno/dance...or think its just too cold for music, give them this album. hands down the best record in 2006, this album flows beautifully. i m not even gonna try and explain the female voice which just adds another dimension to the cryptic sound, but not in a scary way, its welcoming. but once u are in u cant stop dancing, fast and slow and if you have friends who doubt the depth of techno/dance...or think its just too cold for music, give them this album. hands down the best record in 2006, this album flows beautifully. i m not even gonna try and explain the female voice which just adds another dimension to the cryptic sound, but not in a scary way, its welcoming. but once u are in u cant stop dancing, fast and slow and absorb that voice. after few listens the lyrics start to gain more light and you go even farther into this world created by this duo.     It took a couple of listens, but I think I get it. The "Gobblin' Glam" label is overwrought, but this is a fine album. The music is fresh and Karin Dreijer's vocals alone are worth the price of admission. I can leave her brother's Lurch-like meanderings, but their inventive electronica more than makes up for his shortcomings.

    This is one of the most original and refreshing albums of the year. I'm quite wondering how much Q magazine knows about music. OK, I understand you don't like this kind of music, but a magazine has to be objectif. And if you fancy to be a magazine that reviews albums, you must admit this is pure quality.

    Well people from Q certainly have reason to feel like fools because 7 years later it's quite obvious that Silent Shout is modern masterpiece and one of very best albums of whole decade.

    This improves upon Deep Cuts in every possible way, and takes the sound in an ominously dark direction that is much improved to the basic synth pop stuff they were doing beforehand. "We Share Our Mother's Health" and "Marble House" are the standouts, showing the range of Karen's voice manipulation in the former, and Olof's amazing technical work in latter.

    After the mixed bag that was "Deep Cuts" I expected The Knife might be able to make good on the promise that was "Heartbeats" and make a Goldfrapp style synth pop masterpiece. Obviously, they had something else in mind. I gave this album three listens and just found it awful and dissapointing. I am a little surprised by the positive response both critically and from readers of this site. I just don't dig it. No matter how much I've tried, till today. Pitchfork Media put it as album of the year 2006, so let's try. I tend to trust them most of the time even if they tend to hype some bands or artists. I mean, the first Bloc Party's album is good, some tracks like the single "Banquet" is even extremely brilliant, but the album as a whole is, well, unbalanced in quality. The same for Franz Ferdinand. Anyway, back to The Knife. I didn't hear anything which could sound anything like brilliant there, the synths are totally old fashioned in the worst way, the melodies are simply so pedestrian a song like "Marble House" could gain some points at the Eurovision song contest, this is why I gave 1 as rating. They has been compared to Dead Can Dance... while I've never been a fan of that band, where is there any comparison? Lisa Gerrard's voice and investment in their songs is without questioning, but this girl Karin Dreijer Andersson don't even reach Agnetha or Frida from Abba while they are already less than average singers, but at least they brought some guts in their songs. Well, if somebody could explain me what I'm missing with The Knife, that somebody is welcome. I don't want to die stupid. Expand

My advice for approacing this band is similar to my advice for newcomers to Captain Beefheart. My lesson there is, "you must push the Captain away in order to embrace him." Here, it might be akin to, "you must puch the breakbeats away in order to embrace them." Or something A stunning collection of songs.     The thrust of this album may be entirely democratic (that being the dual nature of the artists at hand) but surprisingly (or perhaps not so indeed) the results are not, in fact, if anything, they could be used as oligarchial. Take that as you will, if you need to, for in fact an album of this magnitude cannot be entirely neglected, if it can be neglected at all. It is with this in mind that we must now examine the album, not merely (although certainly this should be included wherein) as a musical object (that is, an object of beautiful sound, indeed sound art) but art as it is in and of itself, that is what is most essential although it is not of course entirely dominant. It is the history, the entirely length of all music and with that all sound and art that this album points to, if you get my drift, so we cannot be too damning in our critique, and with that, shoudl always cast a glance on the inspirations for the work, and with that lay part of the credit as well as part of the blame. Of course there is much more to be said, and much more to say, but in conclusion we must of course ad although to neglect it the realm of comercialism surely must always be at least a tainted virtue, it still, likely, is worthy of consideration if not full purchase.     That Q Magazine review infuriates me. I know the phrase gets thrown around a lot, but this is truly a masterwork, an essential modern album.

    My favorite album of 2006. This is gonna be a classic. The Knife created an scary trip to some sort of dark electronica... too bad they probably won't make anymore.

    Wow, Q Magazine really dropped the ball on this one. I'm in disbelief at the ridiculously low rating, and I didn't even like the album as much as a lot of people I know. Anway, solid album. Not quite in the same teir as Notwist, 13 & God, Hood territory but still an interesting, extremely dark electronic album.

    I love that you took this path on your latest album! Big fan since the days of "Honey is Cool". Love the beats, and the wocals are still cutting edge.

    This is a great album, and will be an album that I will go back to often, years from now. Definitely in my year end best list and most likely my album of the year.

    This is the best thing I've heard all year. It's best played loud in a car when it rains. Some of the CD isn't really that dark (ignoring the lyrics). I just love this. It will be staying in my CD changer for a very long time.

    I've listened maybe 12 - 15 times now and quite like this album. Very modern, love the lyrics. I tell my friends it sounds like the "Anti-Abba"

    This is a stunning album - and hard to describe. Uses sounds from various electronic genres but they mix together in a unique way. The most important thing is the songs - and they are the most consistent selection to be found on any album released this year.

    The Knife's sound is unrivaled by pretty much anything else in music right now. They are daring and unique, and for that Silent Shout is an album that should be in everyone's collections.

    I love The Knife, and this album is quite decent. But "scary"? Absolutely not. This isn't "horror pop", it's "halloween pop". Anyone scared by this needs to listen to some Coil, Nurse With Wound, or even the newer Gary Numan releases... Overall worth hearing if not buying, but I wish Karin would write some lyrics that someone besides just HER would find emotional/intellectual merit in.

The vocals are stripped of anything accessibly human, leaving nothing but emotion. I think it really shows how good of a singer she is to retain so much meaning in her words after all of the effects thrown onto her performance. It's bleak descriptions, it's sounds flashing through your mind, it's videos you've seen and pondered about constantly, trying to solve their awkward puzzle, the haunting sound of the vocals, the grooves you fall in love with, without really recognizing it.. Just amazing. the title track is my personal favourite, Stunning. Just, absolutely, defining electronica album. I did not, at all, like this album instantly, save the title track, and it takes, i would say, about 5-20 listens to realize the Swed siblings have created a near-masterpiece. 'Forest Families', 'Neverland' and 'Like A Pen' are other highlights, and are certainly not the only one's... Just stunning. I will also agree, that the vocals need adjusting too, they annoyed me immensely in the beginning. Wonderful. Expand

    A Classic with simple sounds and simple beats that is just so different to anything going at the moment. Lyrically it's very deep but mesmerising arpeggios got me long before I even knew what she was signing about. The only 'criticism' i have is the synth sounds. not a criticism as such because they are great, but they sound too harsh for this album IMO. I will say though, the first thing that blew me away on this album was the intro to 'The Captain'...it's just shimmers like waves, relaxing the listener until that vocal comes in...then once the fantastic arp and beat comes in, forget about it. class.     It would be the best executed electropop of the decade if some songs had not the exaggerated electronic vocals and the Eurovision Song contest feel in 1 or 2 songs. But the creativity is so damn big and some beats are amazingly innovative like "We Share Our Mother's Health".

    Silent Shout is a solid album that once you begin to digest, it presents a unique sound that will have you listening for more. It's dark sound definitely is an acquired taste and the album certainly is like nothing else I have listened to before.     Q magazine always try to be too clever and think its cool to bag albums that were lauded elsewhere. They even heaped scorn on the last Tom Waits album. And they used to diss Jamiroquai when he was popular then start praising him now that funk-disco is out of vogue. by the way, the knife's dark brooding electronica sounds pretty good to me.

    I listened to this CD for the first time today, and... wow! If I'd have known from day one how awesome this album is, I'd have bought it earlier. Sonic cathedrals, indeed. Also: please don't diss Q too much. I used to read it, and while I now see how crappy it is, it did help me in developing my musical taste. I read The Word now.

    Stunning album. Pulsing shimmering beats evoke a glassy Nordic world of shadowy forests and icy sea-scapes; sophisticated, at times heartrendingly beautiful (From Off To On) and at all times breathtaking.

I love them for that. They're a shining example of how different and creative you can be with synths. Incredibly rich and varied music.     This album is absolutely fantastic - the etheral darkness of it suits the jagged hookiness of the synths and to be honest, I think the vocals add to the otherworldlybe more than they do distract!

    This album is a classic, experimental but still catchy as hell. It deserved higher score than this. Hightlights are "Silent Shout", "We Share Our Mothers' Health", Marble House",... actually the whole album are highlights.

    A really killer electronic album, even if you're like me and don't particularly dig the genre.
    The tracks are dark, layered, and often aggressive. The duo makes heavy use of steel drum sounds, but keep things varied. Silent Shout, Neverland, We Share Our Mother's Health, From Off to On, and Still Light are the highlights, but the whole thing is great.

    Do people from Q have ears, though? It's the best electronic album of last 20 years. What's better than Silent Shout, maybe Teenage Dream by Katy Perry, right Q Mag?

    Björkian originality and aphex twin level prodution the knife are an impressive duo of gifted musicians with a keen ear for rhythm and dance. They create complex pallettes that walk the line between eerie and trance like. Silent shout isn't their best but it's a streak in their quality control.
