  • Summary: This sample-driven Austrialian dance outfit scored a hit in its homeland with this, its debut full-length release (following three EP releases since 1997). The UK music press created a publicity avalanche for the band in the Spring of 2001, as the album picked up strong reviews (quotes from some appear below) and was featured in numerous articles. Packed with over 600 samples of recordings dating from the 1950's to the present (each one credited in the liner notes!) as well as original instrumentation, 'Since I Left You' is a varied and unique record. 1. Quite possibly the best sample record ever made.
  2. There's little doubt to Since I Left You's status as one of the most intimate and emotional dance records that isn't vocal-based.
  3. Everything sounds like it's been triggered by hand and mixed on the fly, practically improvised yet brilliant in scope. [#32, p.54]
  4. It obviously has its high points and moments that drift a little more, but The Avalanches are definitely onto something with the release.
  5. Since I Left You is as much of a revelation now as Primal Scream's life-changing Screamadelica was a decade ago.

Their sound is remarkably fresh, for the kaleidoscope of samples from as many eras as vinyl has existed not only add musical credibility, but also add a depth to this extremely fun album. [May 2001, p.80]
  7. Luckily, the album has an easy-going air that lifts it out of the realm of smart-guy assemblage and into sexy, summery territories.

Expand

Enthralling listen, before its time. All 3500+ samples are brought together brilliantly to create a modern masterpiece. I am slightly pissed off though, that being due to the fact that their second album is set to be released 11 years after Since I Left You and one year from now! Expand

Just listen to Frontier Psychiatrist, Since I Left you, and Electricity. Then, try to tell me that this album deserves anything less than a perfect score. Expand

Deep, soothing and fun all tied together in a perfect album. There's just nothing like it out there. I highly recommend listening to it from start to finish for the best experience. Expand

13 years, and over 100 listens later, this album deserves nothing less than a perfect score. Everything about this album is perfectly crafted to make one of the most danceable, psychedelic, electronic, symphonic, and eclectic albums of the last decade. Worth it. Worth every precious second of anyone's time. Expand

Normally, I don't give out 10's but... This record reminds me of when the TV and the Radio was worth listening to. It reminds me of lying down on the couch with the sun's rays through the curtains of your house. It's a small, maybe medium place, but it's your own house, your property and you love it. This record reminds me of the only thing good about summer; the mood it puts on everything else. In short, I love this album. Expand

This record is to be listened to as a whole from start to finish. It's a long collage of different mixes and sounds. If your into mixing and the like it's good but if you like a good structured song then this is not for you. I'm sure some people think this album is great but I think the album is over rated in general. I'll give it credit in that it is original and tries to break some new ground and considering it's over 10 years old, it still sounds very fresh and modern but the mashed together style doesn't appeal to me for a whole album.
