Overall, Elsewhere is that rarity of a companion album that works well on its own.

Somewhere Else can feel like a long EP with a companion remix disc than a complete, cohesive album, boasting some strong singles and filled out with some efforts that are worthwhile enough but can’t quite match up.

Sally Shapiro continues to revel in this cheesy yet faintly psychedelic sound. [Mar 2013, p.76]

At its best, Somewhere Else produces a few tracks worthy of putting on and dancing to in the middle of the night. At its worst, it's repetitive material that should've stayed on the cutting room floor.

Nothing on the album is overtly bad (except for the goofy blather of "Starman," notably the only upbeat love song on the album) and some of it is actually good (the wailing saxophone of "Sundown" is ghostly and surprising), but what does it offer other than comfort and familiarity?

While the songwriting is more varied here than on previous LPs (Shapiro sometimes causes rather than experiences heartbreak), the pop hooks don’t always ascend to the maximal sound they aim for.

It’s difficult to qualify Somewhere Else as middling because it proposes a whole new set of exciting challenges for Shapiro, but it also brings about a befuddling, poorly sequenced effort that crosses out songwriting ingenuity with across-the-board dancehall padding.

Shapiro's singing is as wispy and wafer-thin as ever, her limp, lovelorn lamentations just as piteously plaintive. Your call whether that's charming or cloying, but it's not exactly the most versatile approach. [No. 96, p.59]

I would have preferred more technicality in the musicianship but it's pop, so that's okay. Overall I just love her vocal timbre and ability, and how beautifully floats over the electronica beats. It's something you can melt to AND dance to. Really great. Full Review »
