If you are looking for something different in the electronic sound, LCD Soundsystem are one of the best things going in that type of music. This is one of the best albumes in 2007. Sound of Silver is not a pop song albume though. Its one these albumes thats a little bite on the arty side but, this secound albume shows that they nkow what they are doing.

LCD Soundsystem, the ultimate hipster band, are a great crossover act. With a fusion of rock and EDM, they have a sound that is irresistible. "Sound of Silver" continues where there eponymous debut leaves off. Starting with the rhythmic "Get Innocuous", it's almost 2 minutes before we hear something other than a percussion instrument in the mix. The track works itself into a hypnotic groove and for a while you wonder if this record is going to be an exclusively dance music affair. "Time to Get Away" is more understated and moves away from EDM maelstrom of the opening track. It's reminiscent of Talking Heads at times and this is always a good thing. Next we have one of the bands biggest hits, "North American Scum", a track which is an ideal microcosm of the bands sound - pop, rock and the coolest elements of dance music. "Someone Great" is deservedly put at the centre of the album - a real centrepiece track that builds gradually towards a feeling of elation before winding itself down again. One of the bands best tracks and worth the entry fee alone to hear. "All My Friends" is a similar builder, over 7 minutes long, we start with a pounding piano with distorted guitars gradually making their way into the mix. "Us Vs Them" is one of the few disappointing moments on the record. Clocking in at over 8 minutes, this is the only time I can accuse James Murphy of self indulgence. "Watch the Tapes" gets things back on track with it's urgency and immediacy before the album's title track, an ode to 80's dance. The likes of Depeche Mode and New Order are written all over this one. "New York I Love You But You'r Bringing Me Down" closes proceedings and is one of the finest endings to an album your likely to hear. Lou Reed would have been proud of this one, with Murphy at his lyrical finest. As soon as it finishes you just want to hit play again. A pleasure of an album. Expand

I f@#$ing love this album!!! This is my best album of all time. Awesome dance tunes, intelligent lyrics, incredible ending. James Murphy is my idol and inspiration, as well as Pat Mahoney, and his incredible technique and endurance in his drums. That's why I am Silver Man here!!!

I wasn't much of an LCD Soundsystem fan until I discovered 'This is happening' a few years ago, which is a brilliant album as is, I decided to go back and hear James Murphy's older albums. So I decided I'd give this album a listen. And holy **** what a ride it's been. It's a watertight, perfect album for me. The opener 'Get Innocuous!' hooked me instantly. So I listened and listened, and realised "Huh, no boring songs yet... There's usually one right?", so I kept listening, and listening. Until I was met with the album closer 'New York I love you but you're bringing me down'. It's almost hard to put this into words but... you don't get albums like this very often. In absolute shock how much I enjoyed this album. A lot of its personal preference, and I understand some people will like other Albums a lot more. But this album is going down in the history books for me. I'm just annoyed it took me 10 years to find this album.
    10/10, not a dull moment.

Dance-Punk at it's finest. That is what James Murphy and DFA Records have been doing for 10 years now. Taking all the best from Human League (Someone Great), Talking Heads (Watch the Tapes) and Elton John (New York, I Love You But You're Bringing Me Down) LCD Soundystem gives it a modern lick with dry drums, Electro house synths and a metric of cowbell. (All My Friends is pretty much a danceable Mr.Brightside) Not only is Murphy's sense of rhythm spectacular, his lyrics are intelligent, clever and funny. If you love Indie Rock, punk, or house music, this album will take all of the best things of it into one perfect package. Expand

It is the fullstop at the end of Shakespeare's play:mark to signal the end of greatness.
This manages into its' nine tracks to fit so much raw emotion with slick and clever execution. Everything feels specific:the grief, joy and meaninglessness of it all. Seems sacred in the way it is given to us. The heart attack that is "Someone Great" takes loss and suspends it bare. From the universal indifference the world has to death :"The worst is all the lovely weather,
    I'm stunned, it's not raining.
    The coffee isn't even bitter,
Because, what's the difference?" Perfectly summarises how death cannot be cliche. It's not rain, black clouds and black clothes. It's real as shown in the same verse:
"There's all the work that needs to be done," life doesn't hault. It matches on. Accepting this is the hard part. The song inspired by the death of Murphy's psychologist keeps the personal and specific even when it's universal. "Sound of Silver" uses regret and irony to reminisce on youth and idealism and the trauma we shrink with time . Never is momentum lost from start to finish. With so many great points picking a highlight would be harder than killing your pet. The lighter moment's such as the euro disco bop "Us vs. Them" uses anticipation and repetition to build towards a satisfying climax. The humor centerpiece(and the most memorable track out of the nine)"North American Scum". It's just as critical as the title suggests as it goes on an aggravated rampage. Skewering American culture and himself, as a North American. The sarcastic edge to his delivery holds an otherwise wordy song together. How he is able to take us through that narrative without losing the musicality is impressive. In summary Sound of Silver is a electronic dance masterpiece that pays homage to the greats(eg. Daft Punk) and creates it's own mystique. It is an artist at their creative best. Just beginning and having way too much fun to stop soon

Benefiting from an iconic start and a breathtaking end, 'Sound of Silver' simply stands out as the origin of many of the music industry's most enduring samples. The mixture of several genres is certainly the recipe for success of James Murphy.

But if 'Get Innocuous!' managed to amaze us all, I personally have to admit that the rest of the album struggled to maintain such an intensity. Murphy's vocals, which span nearly an hour and all nine tracks, yet reach a point of repetitiveness and boredom accentuated by the endless rhythmic patterns, despite the deep and interesting lyrics. The overall versatility of tracks and lyrics clearly avoided us to sink here.

  1. True, LCD's music is not for everyone, which may have something to do with why their fans love them as they do. If you fall into the latter category, however, Silver is gold.
