The big-screen sweep and high-definition melodies (suggesting Weezer's sluggish pep buoyed by the Flaming Lips' hallucinatory orchestrations) make this "malfunctioning android"'s anthems of depression extra vivid.
  2. Their inability to come up with truly novel material leaves them stuck at indie's Triple AAA level both artistically and commercially.
  3. Though it may not be flawless, it's pretty satisfying nonetheless.
  4. Not all of Spells is as memorable as you'd hope. [19 Apr 2007, p.63]
  5. 70
The hooks are stronger, the production richer, and the scale grander. [May 2007, p.84]
  6. The Comas seem to just be hitting their stride with Spells.
  7. Their songs are cute and brisk and, despite its foibles, Spells won't put anybody to sleep.
  8. The Spells cast here are easily escapable and instantly forgettable. [#17, p.83]

I think it's one of the best albums of the year. I was a minor fan of them with their last CD (conductor) and this new CD makes me a believer. Lots of rock, and some sweetness at the end. I think the stand-out track is I Am A Spider. You get two really poppy-rock songs before it and then it breaks into an all out Epic rock song on this third track. Everything that follows is masterful. My only complaint is it's kinda short. Some EPs are longer than this. Think Weezer-length. It's good though. Really good. And the cover of the album is great.
