For the most part, the songs come off as slightly vague sketches for U2 songs. The theater-trained singers sound stiff when they try Bono-worthy emoting.

Despite the years spent on it, the Original Cast Recording of Spider-man: Turn Off the Dark is a mixed bag. It would seem that Bono and Edge went into this score thinking it would be quick, easy, and painless. The truth is that Broadway musicals are none of those things, and their lack of knowledge washes over these 14 songs.

You'll be safe from falling stuntmen, but the soundtrack to Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, Broadway's notorious mega-musical poses a more mundane risk: boredom.

Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark seems uniquely constructed to frustrate the expectations of U2 fans, musical-theater lovers, and even train-wreck enthusiasts, who will be disappointed to find that the show isn't as bad as some have suggested--at least when experienced solely as an album.

Even within the framework of a musical these songs are a murky, turgid mess, too concerned with atmosphere and narrative to reel in a listener and ironically not offering ambience or story enough to suggest that the musical would entertain.
