The only risk is that we forget how brilliant Suicane Gratifaction is. This is not brilliance out of the blue, but an extraordinary continuation of his previous album's strengths. Exciting, literate rock.

Yes, it's great! The AP reviewer says it's grown on him and would give it a 9 instead of a 6 now.

The mostly ballad, mostly acoustic album (is it mono?) has some excellent moments. Stereo? (the rocker disc right?) seems a bit bland to me. Granted I've had the album all of three days now so perhaps it's going to grow on me, but I doubt it's going to stand up to "Let it Be", "PLeased to Meet Me" or "Tim" no matter how many times I listen to it.

Excellent CD - not a huge Westerberg fan until I heard this. Fantastic throughout. AAA is an amazing tune. Demo quality = yes, better than most of the tripe out there = hell yes.

For $15, I would ask an artist to provide me with more than a demo-quality CD. However, the demo has some great songs! Thanks , Paul.

This is the best album I've picked up in a long time, who cares if its demo quality, when did recording quality make a song good or bad....huh?

A little schizo in its rocking disc vs. its mellow disc, it still all sounds like it came from a grumpy genius. Maybe it's an acquired taste. Or, maybe it's acquiring taste. But this album really grows on you. If you are a Paul fan, I think that you will agree that it is his best in a great while. If you are a new listener, it may be a little harder to get into. In a day of highly produced, hit records, it sounds really out of place. But in the tradition of "the first take is the best" these discs had few equals in 2002. Rock would be way better if more bands played what they felt. Here, they have a roadmap. Expand

Best Album of 2002 and most ignored album of year also. Its simplicity is its beauty. The simple, uncluttered arrangements alllow the writer, the singer and his songs to go straight to your rock and roll heart.

Stereo proves he really is the best singer/songwriter of our generation. This album takes a few spins to absorb its beauty and wisdom -- and it's worth it!

If the eight best songs from each of the two albums were combined on one disc, it would be the record of the year...as it is, it's good to see he has put the swill of "Eventually" far behind him...

  1. Just as the busking, basement-tapes balladry of Stereo feels wan and undercooked, the rough-and-ready rock of Mono brims with the thoughtfulness and soulful energy of Westerberg's 1993 solo debut, 14 Songs, and his ever-influential Replacements catalog.

A record that grows on you slowly but surely. [May 2002, p.104]
  3. The reason to get excited about this release, the reason to wake the kids and call the neighbors, is the second disc, Mono.
