  • Summary: This New York indie-rockers return with a follow-up to 2005's 'Collisions.'
Score distribution:
  1. Positive: 6 out of 9
  2. Negative: 1 out of 9
  1. Much of Numbers feels melancholy-by-numbers, so melodies seem recycled, riffs feel tedious, and the emotional register dampens.
  2. What makes Strength In Numbers interesting is the way it departs from the usual.
  3. Calla's sound continues to evolve as they explore divergent musical avenues within the context of potent, atmospheric alt-rock.

What gives [Strength In Numbers]... the sound of a band landing its proper second stride is the hiss and grind that churns docile compositions into studio-kissed wonders. [Mar 2007, p.97]
  5. If they want to match the intensity of the singer's emotional performance, the band needs to loosen things up a bit.
  6. Calla deal in that dark romantic narcissism guys like Nick Cave and Tom Waits are known to wallow in on record after record.

Strength In Numbers makes you wonder if you ever really liked this band at all. [#75, p.94]

These guys are the kings of meloncholic rock and their latest installment is refreshing. As if all their albums are stories of hurt, loss, These guys are the kings of meloncholic rock and their latest installment is refreshing. As if all their albums are stories of hurt, loss, trial & error and eventual self denigration this stuff is great for people with broken hearts or menden hearts who wish to look back and see where thay have come from. "...I put in all this effort..." Not too depressing though and often quite inspirational, Calla pull this new album off with riffs that stick in your mind for days and days and days and days...well worth checking them out. Expand
