  • Summary: The theme of Mike Patton's fourth Fantomas album (which is similar in sound to their first disc) is a calendar, which each track named after a different day of April 2005.

  1. This album is not going to win the band many new fans, but it is certainly a treat for the converted.
  2. There's less brooding menace and more giddy insanity -- without ever giving way to total chaos.
  3. Uncut

Hilariously frenetic, perpetually distracted. [Jun 2005, p.116]
  4. Alternative Press
    80
Intensely bizarre cartoon music. [May 2005, p.178]
  5. 'Suspended Animation' is less a compendium of songs and more a splurging, raging, raping jazz metal fusion machine, weaving in samples, gong noises and assorted cartoon horror.
  6. Although this LP is sequenced into tiny fragments of varying speeds of mood, the LP feels like one super-caffeine express fairground ride.

It begins as quite a thrilling ride. But at this level of concentration, ten minutes feels like an hour; it soon becomes enervating. [#255, p.55]

I found this to be their most accessible release yet, and almost gave it a 9.

He's been eating his own tail since...well Disco Volante? Or at least Director's Cut. This guy doesn't progresst; he keeps on rehashing older ideas & the only change is putting them in ridiculous forms - either very short or 70-minute pieces. He's holding too many projects and as a result he loses his cred as an artist. No new ideas here, sadly it's becoming a standard for the once great and inventive musician. Expand
