Teen Dream - Beach House
Teen Dream Image
  • Summary: The CD/DVD set features the first album on Sub Pop for the dream pop duo from Baltimore.
Score distribution:
  1. Positive: 31 out of 35
  2. Negative: 0 out of 35
  1. Teen Dream sheds the uncertainties evident in past Beach House albums--each melodic turn (and there are many) balances the force of confidence with the momentum of curiosity.
  2. Maybe the growth is only obvious to those who've been following, but that doesn't take away from the obvious upgrade of accessibility found here.
  3. Their dedication to refined, pretty songs means there's a very narrow scope here that didn't afflict Grizzly Bear's "Veckatimest" and which makes proceedings here sound a little wan and wishy-washy after a while.

Why do the hot press and the guardian's scores even count? not to sound too pretentious, but if you're giving this album a 40/100 then maybe listening to music isn't for you. Expand

  2. The third LP by dream pop duo Beach House is absolutely beautiful and deserves all the attention it has gained. Show me a list of last year’s best records without Teen Dream on it and I call it quits (Uncut doesn’t count, they shortlisted Teen Dream for the Uncut Music Award). All the elements harmonise: fantastic tunes, great lyrics and, of course, Victoria Legrand’s voice. Beach House know that it is their biggest asset and it should be exposed fully. The androgynous quality of her chant only makes it more intriguing and sexy. Norway is the obvious highlight: it starts where Silver Soul ends (that pipe organ!), then come the drums and you can hear that “ha-ha” by Legrand. It’s just the beginning but you’re already trapped by the song’s charm. Wait till you get to the finale. The lilting Zebra unveils a melancholic side, yet the song feels strong. Lover of Mine is like a swirl that gives calm instead of chaos. Lows are nowhere to be found. I should mention terrific artwork as well. And please don’t confuse this masterpiece with Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream, ok? Expand

Tedious, slow and plodding, this album doesn't live up to expectations.
