It turns out the two are even better in cahoots than they are solo, each buttressing the other with her own set of complementary idiosyncrasies.

Thao & Mirah is everything a collaborative album should be: Two artists use their divergent, but complementary, approaches to push each other out of their comfort zones and into new musical territory.
  3. Apr 25, 2011
Stylistically, this collaboration veers from intimate in scope to blown-out and dancefloor-ready. And yet, it holds together neatly, shifting from style to style without really losing cohesion.
  4. Apr 27, 2011
Everything on Thao & Mirah feels of a cohesive collaborative piece, separate from either artist's solo work, a combination that synthesizes their individual strengths to outstanding effect.
  5. Jun 16, 2011
As far as collaborations go, Thao & Mirah does a good job of showcasing its contributors' strong points while still allowing them to mesh together as an organic unit.
  6. Apr 29, 2011
All in all, there's not much to quibble with a full-length that breaks down to a good Thao playlist, a solid Mirah sampler, and an EP's worth of original collaborative material.
  7. Apr 28, 2011
This changing of the tide between electric and acoustic makes the album flow. What's evident on Thao And Mirah is the musicality of the duo and the friendship at hand.
  8. Apr 27, 2011
It's an organic album and not without its flaws, but warts and all Thao & Mirah is like getting the soundtrack to a friendship, and that is worth much more than studio perfection or flawless songwriting.
  9. Apr 26, 2011
It's not an especially coherent album, nor a very revealing one, offering surprisingly little insight into Thao & Mirah's relationship either as musical or romantic partners. But it does sound like they're having fun, and that counts for a good deal.
  10. Apr 26, 2011
Though they thrive on moments where sadness meets levity, and songcraft meets eccentricity, Thao & Mirah doesn't always find them working in sync.
  11. May 6, 2011
As a result, Thao & Mirah is a nice side-project for two great performers, but not as revelatory as it could have been for either of them.

Folk rocker Thao Nguyen of the Get Down Stay Down and indie singer Mirah join forces and record an almost perfect pop album. The whole thingFolk rocker Thao Nguyen of the Get Down Stay Down and indie singer Mirah join forces and record an almost perfect pop album. The whole thing was produced by Merrill Garbus of tUnE-yArDs (who guests on Eleven) and I can assure you that she finished her job without any unnecessary crack or rattle. The very first song Eleven happens to be the finest as it bursts with excitement and energy. Little Cup ends with a grand finale of clutter. The voices of Thao and Mirah complement one another and you might get an impression that they are bound to never make a single track separately. Full Review »
