  • Summary: The debut album of dreamlike indie folk rock from duo Thao Nguyen and Mirah Yom Tov Zeitlyn.

It turns out the two are even better in cahoots than they are solo, each buttressing the other with her own set of complementary idiosyncrasies.

Stylistically, this collaboration veers from intimate in scope to blown-out and dancefloor-ready. And yet, it holds together neatly, shifting from style to style without really losing cohesion.
  3. 80
Thao & Mirah is everything a collaborative album should be: Two artists use their divergent, but complementary, approaches to push each other out of their comfort zones and into new musical territory.

As a result, Thao & Mirah is a nice side-project for two great performers, but not as revelatory as it could have been for either of them.

  1. Folk rocker Thao Nguyen of the Get Down Stay Down and indie singer Mirah join forces and record an almost perfect pop album. The whole thing was produced by Merrill Garbus of tUnE-yArDs (who guests on Eleven) and I can assure you that she finished her job without any unnecessary crack or rattle. The very first song Eleven happens to be the finest as it bursts with excitement and energy. Little Cup ends with a grand finale of clutter. The voices of Thao and Mirah complement one another and you might get an impression that they are bound to never make a single track separately. Collapse
