Há que se ponderar dezenas de possibilidades em vários níveis da indústria fonográfica que vão desde pesquisar se os fãs anteriores vão aceitar a nova "carreira" até descobrir como conquistar novos fãs passando pelo trabalho de escolher qual vai ser a sonoridade da fase solo. Quando dá certo temos carreiras como o do Justin Timberlake ou da Beyoncé. Quando não dá certo temos a carreira de Nicole Scherzinger ou da maioria dos ex-integrantes de girls e boy bands espalhadas pelo mundo.

    Felizmente, para Jennifer Nettles, vocalista do grupo country Sugarland, a sua carreira solo está enquadrada na primeira categoria. Lançado no começo de Janeiro, That Girl marca o primeiro lançamento solo da carreira de Jennifer. O álbum faz com que a escolha da cantora por lançar um álbum sozinha seja validada da melhor maneira possível, pois That Girl é um ótimo trabalho. Com produção da lenda Rick Rubin em todas as faixas, That Girl se transforma em um CD country adulto que bebe de várias influencias para elaborar uma sólida, refinada e original sonoridade para Jennifer. Cada faixa tem um cuidado impressionante na construção dos arranjos que as transformam em momentos únicos sabendo utilizar toda a atmosfera criada pelas composições. Escritas por Jennifer com vários outros compositores (em sua maioria à quatro mãos) as letras aqui falam basicamente de amor, mas com classe e romantismo perfeitos sem abusar do pieguismo e colocando pitadas de humor em alguns momentos. Em algumas faixas há uma preocupação em fazer criticas honestas e divertidas sobre a sociedade moderna, mas nada que atrapalhe o andamento romântico do álbum apenas acrescenta substância para o mesmo. Como cantora Jennifer não pode ser a favorita de muito já que ela tem um tom bem nasal e é aumentado quando ela atingi as altas mais notas. Porém, não tem como negar que ela faz um trabalho incrível carregando cada faixa com performances poderosas, versáteis e emocionantes. Há vários momentos excepcionais durante o álbum, mas quero ressaltar duas faixas: abrindo o álbum tem a bela Falling que fala sobre a primeira vez de uma garota de maneira tocante e fechando o álbum tem a ótima regravação da canção Like a Rock.     What it turned into is one of those "Country" albums that is both over and under produced at the same time.
    I was looking forward to hearing something new from Jennifer. What we got is 1 mediocre song and a bunch of fluff. This is what happens when musicians become disconnected from the real world the rest of us live in and exist in their own sheltered bubble. There is no common feel to this album. There is no core, no soul. Its like "here's a bunch of songs that I wrote with my friends that we convinced each other are good. We'll pay Rick Rubin to produce it so that it's going to be awesome by default. We will pad the release with professional critic reviews by people who want things from us and then get two weeks of big press right before the release. Then were guaranteed to have a hit record."
