AGJan 8, 2004Her lyrics sound as if a fifteen year old wrote them. I love if I was your woman but then again it's a remake. She needs to be more innovative and original like outkast, Beyonce, and Pink. She is a soulful singer and that's what I like about her. I just really wish she would sing more original songs and not sample so much.

MarcusBDec 19, 2003What the heck? Alicia is obviously talented, but the songwriting (or selection of themes) is utterly boring. How many times does she need to sing about love? Alicia seems to be plagued by the R&B disease, whereby any talented singer will de-volve into a crooner just interested in singing about men while seeing how many notes they can hit.

VibeBrimming with updated old-school joints, original balladry, and classic-sounding R&B, Diary finds Keys more relaxed, confident, and committed to the tunes of the '70s than ever before. [Feb 2004, p.127]

The project is clearly laboring to be relevant to the current marketplace and thus suffers from a serious lack of cohesion.

Keys plays it far too safe here: There's nothing that will offend, and the content is patently generic enough that almost anyone, lovelorn or heartbroken, can build a personal soundtrack of romantic woe from its raw materials.
