Everything about this album boils down to escape.

Possibly a little early to be wheeling out 'album of the year'-type assertions, but with The English Riviera Mount has set the bar nice and high.

The English Riviera is a perfectly listenable album, and it's one that will, quite rightly, be the soundtrack to the summers of more than a few, but the often indistinct music and insipid lyrical content mean that it's doubtful if its charms will last through to the autumn.

  1. I'd never heard of Metronomy before I picked up on all the hype surrounding this album. And what an album! It's impossible to finish listening to it in a downcast mood. It contains two of the best songs of 2011 in 'The Look' and 'The Bay' (The latter containing a chorus that is out of this World). The fantastic bass-work and synths on the album only adds to the chilled-out vibes. Heavily recommended to anyone with a good taste in music. Expand

  2. Fans of Metronomy might criticise this album for being such a vast departure from Nights out and even more so the fantastic Pip Paine. To take this viewpoint, however, is to overlook the obvious quality of this record - masterfully constructed beach pop that defies any criticism of stripped-down over simplicity with killer riffs and stunning clarity of production. A chill-out masterpiece. Expand

  3. Plinky-plonky rubbish. Maybe Metronomy aren't for me, or maybe it sounds different on the actual English Riviera rather than in rain-soaked Glasgow. I do like a bit of Brit Lo-fi, but I think Belle and Sebastian have done this sort of thing a lot better than this. The rating is for 'The Look' only, avoid the rest. Expand
