  • Summary: The sophomore album for the duo features such guests as Swan and Talib Kweli.
Score distribution:
  1. Positive: 4 out of 10
  2. Negative: 0 out of 10
  1. The record bursts with energy and purpose, revealing the brilliance that advocates like the Roots’ ?uestlove have long suspected 9th had in him.
  2. Prefix Magazine
    80
The chemistry between them, first displayed on 2005's "Chemistry" and now on The Formula, is consistent from song to song.
  3. Minor complaints aside, 9th and Buck have definitely upped the ante on their debut, so much so that a re-naming might be in order.
  4. Uncut
    60
Much of [Buckshot's] edge is lost but fans of hip hop's yellowing indie template will find much to enjoy nonetheless. [Sep 2008, p.90]
  5. 60
With the first release, Chemistry, you would think some experimentalism was going on--but it isn’t. That’s not necessarily a bad quality, but the lack of daring pushes this release into the mediocre pile.
  6. 60
Despite its title, The Formula has its charms. [May 2008, p.96]
  7. But even with 9th's craftsmanship, the melodies, like Buckshot's lyrics are vacuum-sealed. There's a pianissimo modesty that positively sucks the album dry.
