Peacock's organic, sometimes, limpid production makes damn sure that nothing gets in between them, allowing the listener to have a direct, often powerful experience with both.

Some may prefer an even more stripped down approach but these tunes benefit from a bit of polish which also helps distinguish Williams from her family’s gruffer music.

The Highway contains some of Williams' most potent songwriting.

It’s an album that defines an artist, proving that the Williams name (the daughter of Bocephus, Holly comes from the Hank lineage) remains as trailblazing and unique as ever.

She scraped away what is expected and excavated soundscapes that left plenty of room for the ragged edges of her voice--aching and rough where the emotions set in--to stand out.

While her voice is adaptable, it doesn’t have enormous character or range and doesn’t have the special level of purity, richness or interesting rough edges needed to carry really simple songs on its own.

Her music is roots-rock with an Appalachian foundation, in arrangements that rise alongside her forthright alto or let it hold its own nearly unaccompanied.
