With The U.S. Albums, we get a cleansed version of the experience, many times utilizing the UK remasters.... Sure, it’s a quibble to harp over better quality, but there is an argument to be made for historical accuracy.

The US albums is a fascinating document of American music industry practice in the mid '60s. [Mar 2014, p.103]

This box set might test that familiarity [of the Beatles catalogue]. It's like returning home to find the furniture has been moved around, or thayt someone has built new rooms to put your stuff in. It's not that these are bad rooms--they're just not quite where you expect them to be, and certainly not how the architects conceived the building. [Mar 2014, p.90]

It's hard to argue against the use of the 2009 remasters, as this is the best the Beatles have ever sounded. And not only does this sound good, it looks good, so it's a handsome way to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Beatlemania, although anybody who owns the 2009 boxes in addition to the 2004 and 2006 sets may find it hard to justify another purchase.

Jazz critics have long recognized that the greatest jazz musicians of all times are Duke Ellington and John Coltrane, who were not the most famous or richest or best sellers of their times, let alone of all times. Classical critics rank the highly controversial Beethoven over classical musicians who were highly popular in courts around Europe. Rock critics are still blinded by commercial success. The Beatles sold more than anyone else (not true, by the way), therefore they must have been the greatest. Jazz critics grow up listening to a lot of jazz music of the past, classical critics grow up listening to a lot of classical music of the past. Rock critics are often totally ignorant of the rock music of the past, they barely know the best sellers. No wonder they will think that the Beatles did anything worthy of being saved. Full Review »

As most know, these left what you might call Beatles "cannon" when their back catalog were initially released on CD and their releases were consolidated into a global back catalog based on the UK releases plus the US version of  "Magical Mystery Tour". There is oodles of interesting reading to be done on this part of Beatles history for those who are interested. As a bit of a superfan, I couldn't help but be suckered into picking up the 13 disc American albums boxset when I saw it on sale for a measly €80 (ya, they saw me coming). While it's still the same band with the same songs, strangely when released in different collections and sequence you get a noticeably different product. Highly enjoyable for Beatles fans.
