With productions that rely on analog-sounding synthesizers and drums both live and programmed, Teen can hint at Stereolab, Erykah Badu or Dirty Projectors. Yet the songs also tend to metamorphose as they go, starting out perky and pointillistic and ending up, perhaps, in a brass-section chorale or a brawny rock guitar riff.

The Way is a terrific, club-attuned set that renders them barely recognizable. [Jun 2014, p.83]

What TEEN have fashioned here is heady stuff. [May 2014, p.117]

No matter where TEEN decide to turn, they have to be commended for their creativity in conceiving such an other-worldly record.

Every track here is distinct and complex. The Way and Color is not an album designed to blend into the background noise of your day. It really demands your time. It demands to be listened to.

Compared to their chameleonic debut, The Way and Color sometimes almost feels too consistent, but hearing TEEN's fondness for reinvention focused into songs this good is even more rewarding.

It’s a slick and glossy record, even at its most unhinged.
  8. Armed with a wide array of instrumentation, it’s an ambitious attempt at an extravagant pop record and, at their best, the band show a deft touch for layered orchestration.

Though this is an enjoyable listen and a vast improvement on their debut, the promise of where they could end up is its biggest appeal. Stay tuned.

The Way and Color is a gem in its own devastating way, but don't be surprised if TEEN occupy a completely different space next time.

It’s a strange collage of effects and affects that sometimes don’t coalesce and sometimes do.
  12. Apr 22, 2014
The Way and Color may not be the final destination for this breed of indie, but it does serve as a striking signpost along the way.

The Way And Color is an admirable, solid effort, surely paving the way for better material on the not so distant, sunset dripping, horizon.

While fun, some of the foursome’s unique sound is sorely absent.

There’s good reason to think that some of the more middling fare on The Way and Color is no more than growing pains.
  16. Apr 21, 2014
If The Way and Color is not all the way there yet you can hear it as a promising document of a formative period.

It's not a flab-free affair--Breathe Low & Deep is several minutes too long, for starters--but there are enough interesting touches here to make album number three something to look forward to.

A mild sense of self-congratulation permeates the record, as if the attempt to synthesize several disparate elements together is somehow as admirable as that synthesis itself.

What we have is quite ironically, a record lacking both direction and colour.
