Although it's a far superior album than anyone could reasonably expect from Hatfield 25 years into her career, Girl isn't likely to make much of an impression outside of the devoted fan base that covered its recording costs.

She's been in something of a career renaissance ever since the mid-2000s, creating sharp adult pop that's accessible without being commercial, so if fan funding is what's needed to keep her actively recording, this album is a great testament to its potential power.

Hatfield has again delivered a crisp collection of tunes that mostly succeeds.

It's not all bad. Many of the other 13 songs on her 11th studio album (financed by pledgemusic, with a percentage going to animal shelters) show flashes of the melodic brilliance of her early 90s output.
