If last year's Under Construction was a little weird, then This Is Not a Test! is barking mad--in the greatest way.

Missy and Timbaland give us what we've come to expect--the sexiest, most ear-popping, jaw-dropping fusion of old-school rap tribute, sparse R&B, mutant bhangra, and beat innovation on Planet Pop. [Feb 2004, p.100]
  3. This Is Not A Test isn't perfect.... But it's plenty close enough.
  4. More than anything else, This is Not a Test! is a fun listen: Missy obviously enjoys poking fun at herself, and doesn't shy away from promoting a sexually empowered female persona.
  5. This is what she does, really: talk clever, talk dirty, talk funny and, with Timbaland's dedicated assistance, annually expand the possibilities of what pop music can sound like.

It's true that Timbaland's signature style... doesn't seem quite as amazing as it did five years ago. Still, it gets the job done. [28 Nov 2003, p.124]

If she began coasting on 2002's Under Construction, here pop's most innovative black female is on repeat mode. [Feb 2004, p.72]

Track for Track, it beats Dre's record and downright shames Big Boi's disc. This is the first Elliott record that I haven't felt compelled to skip through one of the tracks, and each song just seems to get better and better upon repeated listens. Expand
