Through The Windowpane - Guillemots
Through The Windowpane Image
  • Summary: This full-length debut for the UK-based indie-pop band led by Fyfe Dangerfield includes the previously-released single "Trains To Brazil."

  1. There isn't a duff track to be seen, and you get the feeling the whole thing's been meticulously planned and orchestrated, with a mindset of giving us a record to cherish, something to put on when the chips are down, and that rare thing, one that will almost certainly be loved in equal measure many years down the line.
  2. Guillemots are constructing their own universe and inviting interested parties to join them within it. I can't remember the last time a band did that so effectively and so invitingly.
  3. There's still a kind of inconsistency in the development of Through the Windowpane, an inconsistency that can't quite work itself out in sweeping strings and vaguely dissonant chords, and unfortunately, this diminishes the power of what the album really could be.

Compared to their EP 'From the Cliffs' this debut effort is a complete disappointment. The balance of catchy pop riffs with the emotion and expression offered by the different textures and instruments the Guillmots use is completely off - by the end of the album it sounds like an unitelligible mass of overproduced syncopation. It sounds as if the band is making a lot of noise just for the sake of making a lot of noise which does not make for an enjoyable listen. Do yourself a favor - buy the 'From the Cliffs' EP (which still includes their two best tracks - 'Trains from Brazil' and 'Made Up Lovesong #43' ) and eschew this overproduced debut. Expand
