Time reaffirms that there's more to Ekko's music than ballads, but a little more consistency would have made this a confident debut instead of a promising one.

His music takes the spare depth of Lorde and Tove Lo as a starting point, adding a sharp precision that--along with a floating tenor alternating between a less-sappy Sam Smith and a steelier Jeff Buckley--fuels the tense urgency of “Riot,” and sells even insubstantial material like “Love You Crazy.”

It feels more like a mix of diverse songs than a cohesive album, but there's enough here to keep fans of different genres happy.

Ekko's debut solo LP similarly informs grand pop drama with indie idiosyncrasy – but never quite enough to distinguish it, his stirring tenor notwithstanding.

Though Time is never less than competent, its biggest problem is an unfortunate lack of personality.

Finally, after almost two years waiting for his debut album, Mikky Ekko launched this wonderful work!

With his voice light as an angel, Ekko brought us a heavenly album that took a while to be completed, but when it launched just came to show the ability of Mikky has to compose some wonderful dramatic Alternative Pop music.

The title track "Time" and "Comatose" bring a kind of R&B, while "Watch Me Rise" and "Love You Crazy" show an amazing Pop explosion. "Riot" is different from all the album, with a good and noisy Rock. But the highlights of the album are "Pull Me Down" and "Smile", very well made and produced songs with beautiful dramatic letters.

By far, this is one of the best debut of the year.

Expand
