The Luyas concentrate on sounding endearing rather than epic. [Mar 2011, p.94]

Whatever else can be said about Too Beautiful to Work, it's clearly a demonstration that the trend toward mini-pocket orchestras and detailed arrangements in whatever indie rock is supposed to be sometimes can turn out mesmerizing results.

Too Beautiful to Work isn't focused enough to create an atmosphere that whole, and for all the virtue of its experimental tendencies, "Cold Canada" shows the record might have fared better if it wasn't so antsy.

The record, then, turns out to be a fairly bloodless experience, a trait that suggests the Luyas should take heed of otherwise dangerous advice: A little violence never hurt anybody.

More often than not, it's hard to avoid the conclusion that recent Animal Collective albums have loomed large in The Luya's collective subconscious. [May 2011, p.109]

"Cold Canada" is inscrutable, as much of this fine record is, but give it time and the tunes will ingratiate themselves into your psyche. [Feb 2011, p.65]

The Luyas do supply some exquisite instrumental ingredients--a French horn sent through pedals, an obscure zither-like contraption called the Moodswinger, and various electronic effects--but they have a tough time making anything memorable out of them. Timidity eventually renders their work tedious.
