  • Summary: Each track on the third release from the Los Angeles-based artist is said to represent the sound of an animal's spirit.

It's a patchy but rich tapestry of sounds whose strange shape bewitches you.

A wise, personal and vigorously ambitious album of the year.
  3. Totem is a challenging listen, but it's one of the most creative and exciting debuts I've heard all year.

Most tracks have so much going on that it begins to feel like tectonic plates pulling in opposite directions, heaving two ways at once and leaving the listener dizzy and disoriented. It's Ryat's crystal clear, wriggling voice that's the glue just barely holding everything together.

Intensely individual without being overly self-indulgent, TOTEM offers an at-times madcap, at others beautiful but always-rewarding insight into Ryat's mystical and eccentric world.

Totem is a pensive and heterogeneous offering, with glitchy and glittery textures, wandering melodies and echo. [Aug 2012, p.58]

Bjork and Joanna Newsom are unavoidable reference pints for her hiccuping poetic whimsy. [Aug 2012, p.79]
