A good portion of Mitchell's songs and narratives are excellent for a symphonic setting. A few recorded here even surpass the originals as they shed new light on her intricate melodies and lyrics. While her weakening and aging voice still holds up, it doesn't always match the power of the orchestra. The collection is a bit overlong and could use some trimming, but it is still an excellent listen for fans of Joni Mitchell and her works. If you are just discovering her, start with her hits collection along with the classics "Court and Slpark" and "Blue." Then you can move on to this disc and appreciate it a lot more. Expand

It is really something. You must not only listen to it once; it is much more complex than most pop shit you hear now days.

  1. If you can forget that Mitchell once used to swing, the settings offer warmth and bring out melodies that weren't apparent her first time around.
  2. At moments lush and beautiful, at others overly busy, but never less than daring.

Her hits are underrepresented, more recent songs are overrepresented, and [Vince] Mendoza's overly ornate orchestrations are dull, self-absorbed affairs, frequently swamping the great songs and Mitchell's vocals. [#12, p.147]
