  • Summary: The three Hanson brothers (now ranging in age from 19 to 24) return with their third album, a full seven years after first hitting the pop charts.
Score distribution:
  1. Positive: 5 out of 9
  2. Negative: 0 out of 9
  1. So all-in-all, with every track practically a text book example of what great pop should sound like, even the ballads, Hanson’s return is a welcome one.
  2. Even though Underneath is a little too polished and Pro Tool-ed, that pop sensibility still rings loud and clear throughout the album, and track for track, it's likely their strongest album, even if it lacks glistening highlights along the lines of "Mmm-Bop."
  3. This perfectly pitched record reveals that these hardworking brothers' valiant quest for independence shall be rewarded.

Taylor's delivery is often so slurred that it's hard to decipher what he's singing. [23 Apr 2004]

There are no future standards, but no sugary returns to childhood, either. [May 2004, p.124]
  6. Singing duties are divided democratically, but the best moments belong to Taylor, the Beyonce of the trio.
  7. There's little to dig here as the guys sound like a three-headed John Mayer or a trio of little Joe Jacksons.

I was one of those fans back in '97, but I immediately grew disinterested in Hanson due to the emergence of N'Sync, Backstreet I was one of those fans back in '97, but I immediately grew disinterested in Hanson due to the emergence of N'Sync, Backstreet Boys, Britney, etc. I even laughed when my friend broke her Middle of Nowhere CD in half. However, three days ago, on a whim, I decided to listen to visit Hanson's site. After listening to a few clips, I ended up getting the album. I was that impressed. Hanson is the perfect, feel-good band and are very talented musicians. Kudos to them. Expand

This album is a true masterpiece from real musicians who know how to keep their audience amazed. Every year, I anticipate Hanson's next This album is a true masterpiece from real musicians who know how to keep their audience amazed. Every year, I anticipate Hanson's next move. In 2004 when Underneath came out, I was astounded by how much musicianship and craft Hanson have created and how they have evolved from the top of the pop charts to the top of the indie labels. Since 1997, Hanson has had me hooked to their catchy lyrics and their flare. This album gets a 10 as this is one of the best albums you could ever consider. Expand
