  1. They sound more natural than they ever have on record, and Brian Vander Ark and Donny Brown respond by their best set of songs.

Adam's milked a meaty, soulful rock album out of the band…and it is good.
  3. The group has effectively reinvented/refound itself as a crack power-pop band.
  4. A rather complacent set of radio-ready lite alt-rock.
  5. Underneath is the Verve Pipe's third album and it's more of exactly what made them a hit with "The Freshman" -- earnest alternative-lite vocals that cross Matchbox Twenty with Phil Collins delivered in sugary choruses that loop endlessly in case you weren't paying attention the first ten times.

A mature effort from a wonderful band that evolved with every new release. Sadly, this was their last album for adults (they have released 2A mature effort from a wonderful band that evolved with every new release. Sadly, this was their last album for adults (they have released 2 family albums since then). But what an excellent effort to go out on. It's 12 years later and this album is still on constant rotation in my catalog. The sincerity, charm, and pure genius of "Underneath" easily stands the test of time. Expand

Amazing album from one of the most underrated, unappreciated bands of our generation. Every song is incredible!

I always liked "The Freshmen" when it was being played by radio stations a lot in the late 90s. I rediscovered this band when I saw their self titled CD in the public library. I already had the CD that "The Freshmen" was on and I wanted to hear how the band sounded from CD to CD. I was pleasantly surprised. When I found "Underneath" also in the same library, I borrowed it and I am enjoying it quite a bit too. While their tone has been diminishing, this is by no means any indication of the quality of their music... merely the aggressiveness of the music. This CD is their most toned down so far, but it is still a great CD. Collapse

Not my kind of music, but its sounds are somewhat soothing, but the lyrics are indeed questionable.
