Cornershop have stocked up on musical friends and touchpoints to deliver a heterogeneous album that confirms, wherever they go next, there's plenty more in the 'Shop window to see.

Urban Turban is another irresistible Cornershop mash-up. [Aug 2012, p.86]

Perhaps there's a danger here and there of Singh and Ayres getting their heads down and too deep in the blissed-out funk ... but really they just want to see what sticks. That's all they've ever tried, and most of it does.

If Singh's genial, lounge-y tunes don't always hit groove nirvana, his wandering heart is at least in the right place.

I can assure you that you will not stand still while listening to this album.

Urban Turban is more grin-inducing than a piano-playing cat.

Inconsistency's a little too much the watchword, but there are none more Something For Everyone.
  8. Several [guest singers] distinguish themselves‑-SoKo all breathy, Lorraine nice and rough‑-as does (Tjinder) Singh, changing up the rhythms as he "milks" his usual tiny store of melody.

After 21 years, it's hard to believe Tjinder Singh and Ben Ayres are still capable of producing moments as vivid and relevant as these.

The tracks are well made and good stuff, but on the whole Urban Turban feels a little too all over the shop to pack the wallop it deserves.

Urban Turban is consolidation for Cornershop, pulling together old and new tracks and showing as many hands as they can.

All of this is creative and fun, but also a little half-baked, and ultimately impersonal.

This feels modern but in a distinctly '90s fashion: the melds and mashups of club music and psychedelia forecast a future straight out of 1996.

Mostly, it's funky pop, half-deconstructed and relentlessly optimistic. [Jun 2012, p.71

With Urban Turbanm, Tjinder Singh reinforces his position as one of the UK's more engaging musical minds.

There's the occasional meander and they'd surely revel in a bigger production budget, but there's nobody remotely like them and few who seem to actually enjoy being in a band more.

Full of life and sunshine. [No.87, p.53]

Urban Turban feels especially emblematic of a band that's fully liberated itself from any commercial or audience expectations and shifted its experimental ethos into overdrive.

Some tracks are enjoyable, but the overall sound of the album is just tasteless.
