    Reissued last year, the debut Icky Mettle had their most celebrated pop songs ("Web in Front," "Wrong," "Plumb Line") but the follow-up Vee Vee was just as great, and thicker.

    While this would be a step backward for anyone else, the band has a talent for effortlessly making the unpolished seem charming as it bashes its way through tracks like "Nostalgia" and "The Worst Has Yet to Come."

    There's a clear warmth and passion in this remaster; if you've yet to let this album grow to be a part of your life, get this.

    Remastered by Weston as fuzzy or sharp, this generous re-release (the second in a series by Merge Records, founded by Superchunk) should win Vee Vee another devoted following.

    Following their excellent debut, Icky Mettle, Archers of Loaf go for a more loud, raw sound. Icky Mettle got the better b-sides of the two re-issues, but the albums themselves is pretty close. I can kind of see the comparison between Pavement and Archers of Loaf, but it's a thin line. Both have such unique qualities that I find it hard to really say who's better, plus it's all subjective anyways. But if you were to make the comparison, Vee Vee is the Slanted and Enchanted and Icky Mettle is the Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain.… Expand

    Though it may seem disappointing compared to Icky Mettle, this album is still full of off-kilter, raw and catchy songs. If you first listen to the album and it seems like a bunch of people failing at singing and playing the guitar simultaneously, stick with it. You'll start to find the melody in the guitar lines and the shouted choruses will stick in your head. The only songs I disliked were 1985 and Nostalgia, both throwaways in my opinion.… Expand
