With tracks such as Clarity and Without Prejudice helping make this the most accessible Protest The Hero release to date, every one of these 11 tracks have enough substance to fulfill all your musical wants and needs. [26 Oct 2013, p.54]

The result is Protest the Hero's best effort to date, one where (relative) restraint yields a far more powerful product.

They're sometimes lost attempting to balance clumsy choruses with fleet fingered flash. At other moments, however they absolutely nail it. [Nov 2013, p.84]

If there's anything superfluous going on, it's simply happening too fast to worry about it, and while this means that it takes more than one listen to really take in what's going on, the album is solid enough that a second pass is a welcome proposition.

Too bad it doesn’t come together better as it merely buckles down into a messy heap of proggy tomfoolery.

Protest the Hero have never been short on energy, but their fourth album lacks variety and rarely allows the listener to breathe.

(Like said in the song "Animal Bones") Instead it wants to be an impressive progressive and powerful on-the-point-performance! All the songs on the album sound unique and have their own things making all of those songs listenable on their own, but also fitting perfectly in the scheme of the album.
The lyrics are pretty deep and meaningful with Rody Walkers indistinguishable way of writing them understandable yet complex. As he did in the albums before he uses a lot of allusions and not to abstract metaphors, so a lot of people can understand the meaning of every single song!
Overall it´s my favourite album, the guitarwork, basslines and drums are epic and complex as always but still accessible and bright in tone.

I consider Volition their best effort, I had listened to it like zillion times and it still keeps me shaking till this day. The sonicI consider Volition their best effort, I had listened to it like zillion times and it still keeps me shaking till this day. The sonic speeding, the Nintendo sounding guitars, clean emotional yet aggressive singing style with occasional growl, sick drumming style and the virtuosic guitar tapping. Altogether creating maybe not so inventional sounding piece as it had been years before but it took some time for the whole band to grow into this. Not to mention the sound and production might be the perfect fit for the band and their style. It just feels and sounds right. This effort came out the best sounding of their 4 albums released till this day. PTH combines the sonic elements of hard core, metal core, math metal, heavy metal, djent to a very unique degree. It goes for me as the best album so far I heard in the last 5 years. Producer Cameron McLellan contributed also heavily alongside his obvious duties by performing several instruments on the album and also being active as composer, which also became a huge factor. ♫ To be honest my obsession with is album became so big that I not only bought the digipack version of the album but also ordered the digital book with transcribed guitar parts and made a t-shirt with the limited edition album cover. I have enjoyed every album by PTH to date and i am glad to say that this one lives up to all they've done before. Although it falls a fewI have enjoyed every album by PTH to date and i am glad to say that this one lives up to all they've done before. Although it falls a few notches below their first two releases, Volition does a better job than that of Scurrilous. Crazy guitar riffs, bass follow ups, expert drumming and those signature vocals propel this album and carry it to success. Expand
