Wake Up... is the set of inspired anthems they needed to deliver in '96. [Oct/Nov 2001, p.103]
  2. Whatever angst might have settled under the surface has been swept clean and in its place a jubilant spiritual quest in is place.

This record is strictly Music For Adults, with songs about kids and real love and life.... Essentially, it is soothing background music for troubled times.
  4. So, even if it's wrapped in new clothing, this is essentially a return to basics, and it's a welcome one, since it's melodic, stately, and somber.
  5. The band sounds strong but derivative of its own best work.

    It's official: Dolores O'Riordan is rock's most vapid lyricist. [26 Oct 2001, p.125]

Very calm, ethereal, melodic. The opening "Never Grow Old" has that bittersweet feeling that is so typical for The Cranberries, "Analyse" has an amazing drum indie beggining and catchy vibrant guitar, "Time Is Ticking Out" is very elegant and brity.. "This Is The Day", aside that is similar with the "Zombie" in some parts, is a real indie monster and the title track goes with the best songs this band ever made. The Smiths-like "Do You Know", "Every Morning" and closing track "Chocolate Brown" are the albums highlights in my opinion. All in all, I'm glad the band decided to stop with this album. Decent way to go hiatus and nice place to start from again. 8/10 Expand

While the singles are pretty decent, the whole album sounds like a bit of a watered down rehash of their earlier high points. Such was the quality of those high points, a watered down rehash is still worth a listen and has its merits. "Analyse" (see watered down "Dreams") is a lovely number. "Time is Ticking Out" is another high point along with "This is the Day". To be honest the whole first side of the album is pretty solid while the songs on the second half of the album, while still decent, are definitely less memorable. They were running out of gas for sure and picked a good time to go on hiatus at this stage. One could argue they could have stayed there. Expand
