Wander/Wonder is an exercise in depth, a flowing suite of mermaid's lullabies that turn seductive.

There's a simultaneous show-of-hand that somehow compliments that emotional weight rather than hinders it. It's that weight that gives these compositions durability, and considering how naked Acab leaves his samples, some staggering life. All said, it's really the bottom line here.

On Wonder/Wander Koone transcends such dippy, blog-generated catch-phrasing, displaying a sense of genuine dominion within the art of experimental laptop pop.

While Wander/Wonder is assured and richly orchestrated for an artist with a long career ahead of him, there is just some aspect of real world struggle with which it fails to engage.

Whilst Koone's recycling of chiming keys and bell like samples throughout each track might seem lazy, it in fact makes Wander/Wonder effective as a cohesive listen, and that's how its euphoric atmosphere should be heard.

This is functional music that highlights the simple pleasure of artfully arranged sound, the kind of gorgeous and evocative record that fills up the room and shifts your perception for 37 minutes and then brings you gently back to the surface.

See Birds, was a promising debut, but Wander / Wonder is the kind of record that can pull you into its emotional undertow from the minute those helium angels start singing.

Wander/Wonder's progression is satisfying and absorbing without ever exuding cloying self-awareness, and the same goes for its creator: Koone is clever and inventive, but far too engrossed in his vision to break momentum and pat himself on the back.

Pleasant, often phenomenal. And then afterwards, most of it is gone minus those times when it got real.

Balam Acab have crafted a fully fleshed-out record, with enticing dimension and its own subtle meanings.
