Does not trump or recapture the heights of "The Remote Part" or the intensity of "100 Broken Windows", nor does it mark a step forward. But there are good songs here. This album is a reminder, not the proof, of what a good band they are

I only got into Idlewild recently, when I got a copy of 100 Broken Windows. I missed it at the time,... but I think it is an Amazing album. Warning/Promises is a poor OUT OF TIME at best.... Back to the drawing board guys!

Very mediocre. Only the standout and superb Love Steals Us From Loneliness catched my attention... and maybe El Captain and I Understand It...

  1. Woomble’s lyrics, while literate, are never quite as clever as his supporters would like to believe.
  2. ‘Warnings / Promises’ is the work of a band pushing itself to the limits of its generous, but ultimately not boundless musical ability.

There are times when their admiration for R.E.M. burns a little too brightly... but overall this marks another step forward. [Mar 2005, p.100]
