  1. The Wire

Even more than on past outings, Kirby seems drawn to a sense of disconnect, refusing to let the elements of each track interact with one another. Yet Dead Empires is also rich with experiments and surprises. [Nov 2013, p.60]
  2. Nov 19, 2013

In short, Watching Dead Empires In Decay is a wonderful enigma of an album.
  3. Nov 19, 2013

Although Watching Dead Empires In Decay lacks content other than song titles, it evokes spaces that need no explanation.

Kirby's fondness for disorder is a perfect fit for this type of material. Dream states rarely make sense until you plunge deep into them, and Dead Empires throws up thousands of different routes to get tangled up in on the way down there.

Truthfully, this is a record not for the faint of heart as listening to it may cause palpitations, but those brave enough to journey into Kirby’s mystifying landscape will be fascinated with the rotting corpse-like stuff that he brings to the table under this pseudonym.
  6. Uncut

Here he bends the two impulses on a dark, pulsating album that sits alongside other neo-industrial work from Raime and the Haxan Cloak. [Dec 2013, p.74]

He leans toward ominous possibilities: creaks and thuds, clanks and scrapes and sounds that are more like pressure zones than notes; at times an elegiac string section or a slow thread of melody looms.
